I don't want to be one of those people who don't believe in any kind of magic, you know.

If I could only make one thing in my whole life - if I could only create one work of art - it would be Before Sunset. Words fail me!

"I feel like if somebody were to touch me, you know, I would... dissolve into molecules."

Incredibly written, shot, and acted. Eighty minutes of sheer gorgeousness - and a pitch perfect ending that left me speechless and stunned! I knew I was in love by the opening shot of the very first scene - a book reading in Shakespeare and Company, the camerado and I's amazing discovery on the Left Bank!

Spot the camerado, browsing in her purple Roman shawl and pink Florentine bag!

I actually screamed! Ahem. In other news, today my delightfully crazy old Irish grandma was regaling me with stories of her childhood in rural Ireland, growing up on a farm in Killarney with fifteen brothers and sisters. She told me of the SeanchaĆ - bearers of 'old lore,' storytellers who wandered the country, and would weave wonderful tales of 'adventure and magic' in exchange for dinner and a place to sleep for the night.

I am the Teller of Tales,
Gaze into the fire with me,
For I know of the Badger Lords,
And their mountain, by the sea...
So here is my story, may it bring
Some smiles, and a tear or so,
It happened, once upon a time,
Far away, and long ago.
Outside the night wind keens and wails,
Come listen to me, the Teller of Tales!
-Brian Jacques

Who are we but strolling players,
Wand'ring through the long ago,
Joys and sadness, hopes and longings,
Keep us traveling onward though
The laughter and applause of others,
Who view the passing cavalcade,
Leave echoes hovering some far summer,
Floating round a woodland glade,
'Twas but a tale for your amusement,
Like my unworthy rhyme,
Gone, alas, into those realms,
The land of once upon a time.
-Brian Jacques

Another poem my grandma can still recite from memory, at 88! It is about "an old woman of the roads":-

"O, to have a little house!
To own the hearth and stool and all !
The heaped up sods upon the fire,
The pile of turf against the wall!
To have a clock with weights and chains
And pendulum swinging up and down!
A dresser filled with shining delph,
Speckled and white and blue and brown!
I could be busy all the day
Clearing and sweeping hearth and floor,
And fixing on their shelf again
My white and blue and speckled store!
I could be quiet there at night
Beside the fire and by myself,
Sure of a bed and loth to leave
The ticking clock and the shining delph!
Och! but I'm weary of mist and dark,
And roads where there's never a house nor bush,
And tired I am of bog and road,
And the crying wind and the lonesome hush!"

"In a darkening world, child, do not fear;
Believe in laughter, believe in life, and true love will appear."

I adore your posts. Always. They are so full of beauty and whimsy, I always feel happier after reading them.

It funny all those stories your grandma was telling you, because I was having a similar discussion with my boyfriend the other day. He is also Irish and he was recalling things he learned when he was young and living in Ireland.
I made him promise so many times that one day we would visit his family there that I think he is starting to think I'm only going out with him because he is Irish :)

Have an awesome day, dear!

Grandmothers' tales are the best. Yours sounds fascinating. I'm lucky to have both sets of grandmas around, I'm constantly sapping them of stories from the past :-)

I should finally rent Before Sunset once and for all, it's been on my movie queue for a while now..

I still need to watch this movie in full ugg. And I love that first Jacques quotes. Your Grandma's stories sound delightful and right out of a fairy tale, you're so lucky

Ooo that was one amazing quote, thank you so much, I completely agree. I think that's why I've always adored fantasy. My favorite stories as a child were Harry Potter and various versions of King Arthur. It kind of went away in those generic teenager years when I wanted to wear the same pair of shoes and listen to the same bubblegum pop as everybody else, naturally not giving me a lot of time for a true fantasy life. but i've rediscovered fairyland, Pullman, and renewing my love for HP & King Arthur now :) its nice because I need sort of another world I can believe in, fantasy stories are I guess really the closest thing I have to religion. Its hard to articulate properly, because its not as if I expect a sword in a stone (or the lake if we're being true to legend haha) or unicorns, but its something that will always be there for me, that I have my own personal relationship with, and helps make monotanous daily life bearable. Sorry if I'm rambling, but I think you'll probably understand. I am constantly flabbergasted at people (like your friend's friend) who have no desire to discover & explore. How can you not see a movie based off of a book and not want to read the book at least afterwards? How can you not search for new bands to love no matter how great your itunes playlist seems to be? How can you not go to cute indie movies rather than every popcorn flick? Its just amazing how many smart people there are, but who aren't actually intellectual. I really value good conversation, which is why so many teenagers are endlessly disappointing. We don't need to agree on everything, but we need to intrigue each other, build off of eachothers ideas, explore. I sometimes do need a good "bad" crappy movie to see or just want to discuss this cute boy in a class of mine, but I need substance too and you would think being at a university you would it, but so many kids are surprisingly blah. That is why I LOVE our long comments because we do everything above that I love-actually converse and learn from each other. thanks again! I'm so glad I've found a likeminded blogger
